I wrote about this feature coming to the web in an earlier post but now it is a fact. Google released plug-ins for Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3.5+ and Chrome 4+ that disable Google Analytics tracking.
Seeing as Google Analytics is by far the most popular free service for getting statistics about the visitors of a site this kinda is a big deal for those of us who have a site. Of course all the hoopla is about privacy and the “reported?” fear of Internet users that everything can be tracked and traced by Google.
It seems that after -or even before- Facebook also Google has bowed to the public demand for more privacy on the web. I must say that I don’t quite understand this fact in combination with the explosive growth of all of the social networks, but hey that’s just me..
For all of those that are concerned about their privacy can install an add-on and permanently disable the script. After installing the add-on, you’ll notice that the browser still sends a request for this file: http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js when visiting a page that uses Google Analytics, but it no longer sends information to Google Analytics.
The big problem ofcourse is that if a lot of users install the add-on, us website owners will no longer have accurate stats.
I’m wondering how long it will take until more and more website owners will abandon Google Analytics and implement other means of visitor tracking? I for one am glad that I have installed triple tracking from day one
Let me know your thoughts. Will this make you change the provider of your analytics from Google to another supplier?
